Those sheets of paper were placed inside a large, yellow clasp envelope. That envelope was then placed inside a corrugated cardboard box. The box was then mailed to the UK from Switzerland.</p> <p>While all of these materials are recyclable, it seems like a little bit of a waste to send what could have fit in an everyday DL-sized envelope (that's about the size of a number 10 envelope for we Americans) in ridiculously oversized packaging. Plus, it probably would have saved them a bundle on postage.</p> <p>Apple has been making a concerted effort to reduce its environmental footprint: not only with the program mentioned in this mailer, but for everything from <a href="http://www.tuaw.com/2008/06/30/iphone-3g-to-be-shipped-in-eco-friendly-packaging-spuds/">iPhone packaging</a> to <a href="http://www.tuaw.com/2007/05/02/apple-confirms-led-displays-in-macs-during-2007/">how it makes its displays</a>. Surely this isolated incident isn't representative of the company as a whole, but still. After all, we're not <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a>. People aren't going to risk their jobs to deliver insider information.</p> <p>That being said, a tip that shot into our mailbox this morning really tickled my fancy: not because I think it's accurate but because I really really <em>want</em> it to be true. Our anonymous tipster laid out a description for <a href="http://www.tuaw.com/tag/iTunes/">iTunes</a> Unlimited that I thought was brilliant. Although this guy (by definition) does not work for Apple, he really ought to.</p> <p>He suggested that the late September Apple event would introduce several great items that we'd love to see but haven't been holding our breath for. These are disk access for the <a href="http://www.tuaw.com/tag/iPhone/">iPhone</a> and iPod Touch and iTunes Unlimited.</p> <p>His take on iTunes Unlimited goes as such: For just $129.99 (or $179.99 bundled with MobileMe, or $99 for current MobileMe subscriptions), you would buy unlimited music access for one year. This would offer you 256 Kbps music, or as Steve would boom it, "The highest quality digital music subscription service ever." You could download and play directly on your computer or iPhone/iPod and the option to "buy and keep" would replace the subscription version of a song with a downloaded version.</p> <p>I totally love this idea. It's not the first <a href="http://www.tuaw.com/2008/03/19/rumor-apple-to-offer-itunes-subscription-model/">iTunes subscription rumor</a> we've heard, either. I'm not betting that would happen. But it brought a huge smile to my morning. What do you think of iTunes Unlimited? Alex Schaefer, ApolloIM's founder, has recently joined the MobileChat development team. In a <a href="http://tumblr.twenty08.com/post/46493402/welcome-aboard-alex">blog posting</a> by the developer of MobileChat, he said that both applications underwent "friendly competition" and that, while there was no clear winner in the iPhone IM business, users got the benefit from the ongoing competition. <br /><br />Now that Alex has joined the other team, you can expect that MobileChat will only get better. So if you've been doing the right thing and holding the hard plastic connector to disconnect the cable, you might not have to pay <a href="http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/shop_mac/mac_accessories/power?mco=NTMxNTI">another $80</a> for a new power adapter.</p> <p>If your connector looks like the one pictured, and has been babied its entire life, then take it back to an <a href="http://www.apple.com/buy/locator/service/">Apple-Authorized Service Provider</a> or an Apple retail store for an evaluation and replacement. Back in June we mentioned the <a target="_blank" href="http://www.tuaw.com/2008/05/31/viva-las-imacs/">Fontainebleau's plans in Vegas</a> -- they're also installing another 1,400 24" iMacs in rooms at the flagship resort in Miami Beach. <br /><br />Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines has Mac minis installed on its Freedom Class (3,600 passenger) ships, and is working with Apple on IT infrastructure for its upcoming <a target="_blank" href="http://www.oasisoftheseas.com/">Oasis Class</a> (5,400 passenger) liners. So why not label those discs with something a little better than a permanent marker? The <a href="http://global.dymo.com/enUS/DiscPainter/default.html">Dymo DiscPainter</a> is a rather large but impressive printer for one thing only: optical media. On October 1st, the price rises to US$14.99.<br /><br />After installing Fantasktik, a small taskbar appears either just below the menu bar or just above the Dock -- you can set the location from System Preferences. The taskbar shows all of your open applications and windows in small icons, and by hovering your cursor over the icons you see a preview of the window contents. The preview is powered by Core Animation and provides a look at all open windows for an application through a MultiTouch-like interface called Click and Slide. <br /><br />You can minimize the Fantasktik taskbar by clicking one of the small buttons on either end, and double-clicking an application icon collapses or expands all window icons associated with that app.<br /><br />Fantasktik requires Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard. Everything is great - except for one thing which is extremely unusual (genius words), I wanted to share with you guys. When I am in my home (and only when I am in my home) my phone believes I am in Springfield PA. I live in Minneapolis MN. It doesn't matter if I am on the 3G network or my personal WiFi network (I've isolated each), Google Maps always centers on Springfield PA. If I walk down my street, watching Google Maps- the phone re-orientates itself back to Minneapolis MN. The Genius tried to re-set the time-zone and a couple other things, but it didn't work.</p> <p>Anyway, I've got a bunch of screen caps if you guys want to see them. I just can't figure out why BOTH 3G and WiFi would both point to the same (incorrect) place...one uses cell towers and one uses IP addresses right? Anyway, I'm not necessarily looking for you guys to fix it or anything - just thought you might want to know. Sorry.</p> <p>The best option for you comes from our own <a href="http://www.tuaw.com/bloggers/erica-sadun/">Erica Sadun</a>, who says to drag the file onto any application icon with the Command and Option keys held down. That way, the Finder will force the app to open the file. This works with items in your dock, or just with <a href="http://www.tuaw.com/2008/07/31/mac-101-folder-shortcuts-in-the-finder/">an open Applications folder</a> in the Finder.<br /></p> <p>Otherwise, every application maintains a list of the kinds of files it can open. Launch Services, a part of the Mac OS X system, reads these lists, and compiles the set of "Recommended Applications" that you are presented with.</p> <p>As such, many users recommend keeping your Launch Services tidy by rebuilding it using the <a href="http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1564443&amp;tstart=1">Terminal</a>, or a utility like <a href="http://www.rubicode.com/Software/RCDefaultApp/">RCDefaultApp</a>. Chances are excellent that you can use your cell phone.<br /><br />Reader Steven Madow reminded TUAW that many cruise lines use a service called <a target="_blank" href="http://www.cellularatsea.com/shipsinservice.htm">Cellular At Sea</a> to provide you with satellite-linked cellular service. Almost 100 ships currently use the service, which is a joint venture between AT&amp;T Mobility and SeaMobile.<br /><br />Madow said that with his iPhone, configuration was a simple matter of looking at the settings (right) for a carrier called "Cellular at Sea." The cost of the service varies depending on your home carrier, but for AT&amp;T users it is about $0.79 per minute. While that's not exactly cheap, it's priceless if you need to keep in touch in case of an emergency.<br /><br />Most cruise lines also provide Wi-Fi based onboard Internet service. Rates for these services usually range from $0.75 per minute down to $0.30 per minute. A deep simulation game with a casual skin? It sounds just too good to be true.<br /><br />But who knows -- maybe the upcoming <em>Astro Ranch</em> will be worth the excitement. Paul Farley certainly makes it sound good: they say they've been pushing the 3D system to new heights, and that they're aiming to provide a deep enough game to appeal to players with a lot of time on their hands, as well as a fun game that casual players can pick up and then put down after about 10 minutes. <br /><br />They're aiming for connectivity as well -- the game is based on a '50s-style space ranch, and players will supposedly be able to visit each others' ranches, send messages back and forth and even compete and trade with each other. They even claim to be able to connect iPhone players to farmers playing on the DS, but we'll believe that one when we see it.<br /><br />Unfortunately, the screenshots don't impress all that much, but just like the iPhone itself, it seems this game's got a lot of potential. Sounds like they're aiming for a release on the iPhone, DS, and the N-Gage (people are still making games for <a href="http://www.n-gage.com/ngi/ngage/web/g0/en/location.html">the N-Gage</a>?) later this year. Our Twitter buddy <a href="http://www.jamiephelps.com/">Jamie Phelps</a> says that <a href="http://twitter.com/jxpx777/statuses/891019680">"the innards are finished"</a> and the store should be open within the next week or so. <br /><br />If you were on our last <a href="http://www.tuaw.com/2008/08/17/reminder-talkcast-tonight-10-pm-et/">Talkcast</a>, you know how wildly interesting it is to see an Apple Store opening (our own Robert Palmer <a href="http://www.tuaw.com/2008/08/13/carlsbad-ca-apple-store-opening-saturday/">attended one just last week</a>), so keep an eye on this one, Texans.<br /><br />Of course, we should mention that as incredibly awesome as our readers are, they are not always trustworthy when it comes to Apple Store news. Our good friend Ged Maheux kindly <a href="http://www.tuaw.com/2008/07/31/first-picture-of-the-greensboro-nc-apple-store-under-constructi/">tipped us a little while ago</a> about an Apple Store opening near him in Greensboro ... which then <a href="http://gedblog.com/2008/08/17/greensboro-apple-store-update/">turned out to be a Williams Sonoma</a> instead (the Apple Store is still opening there, but not until next year). They've wiped it from the beta, claiming it needs "further development," and haven't given any indication of when it might return.<br /><br />Here's hoping it gets back in there before the expected release sometime in September, but then again, it's not like Apple should be taking any new chances with features right now.
